Botanica del Barrio Activation by Felicia ‘Fe’ Montes
Join MOAH and Barrio Science artist Felicia ‘Fe’ Montes on the BLVD as she activates her social practice project Botanica del Barrio, a mobile medicine cart that aims to involve community members in the education, dialogue, documentation, and practice of wellness remedies, healing recipes, and herb and plant uses found in ancestral medicine. Participants are invited to learn and share about the remedies, medicinal herbs, and healing traditions passed down to them. The roving Botanica will be on the BLVD during the BLVD Market from 4-6 PM.

Acompaña a MOAH y a la artista Felicia ‘Fe’ Montes en el BLVD mientras presenta su proyecto de práctica social Botánica del Barrio, un carrito médico ambulante que busca involucrar a la comunidad en la educación, el diálogo, la documentación y la práctica de remedios de bienestar, recetas curativas y la medicina ancestral usando hierbas y plantas, como parte de la exposición La Ciencia del Barrio. Te invitamos a aprender y compartir remedios, hierbas medicinales y tradiciones de sanación heredadas de tu familia. La Botánica itinerante estará en el BLVD durante el BLVD Market, de 4 a 6 PM.
About the Artist
Felicia 'Fe' Montes (M.A./M.F.A.) is a Xicana Indigenous holistic artivist, femcee, designer, poet, professor and practitioner of the healing arts from East Los Angeles. Her research, creative work and praxis focus on the intersection of art, social justice, spirituality, women of color feminisms, indigenous culture, music, and community wellness. Montes is the founder of cultural artivist projects including In Lak Ech, Botanica del Barrio, El MERCADO y Mas and director of Mujeres de Maiz and is an assistant professor in Chicanx/Latinx arts and social practice at Cal State University Long Beach. A public scholar and performer, she has published in the books Rushing Waters, Rising Dreams, Fleshing the Spirit, Voices from the Ancestors, as well as poetry in Mujeres de Maiz zines and the book Fleshing the Spirit. Her self-named Fe clothing line is featured in a co-written article in the book MeXicana Fashions. In the Spring of 2024, University of Arizona Press published a book anthology she coedited and writes in about the organization she co founded and directs, Mujeres de Maiz titled Mujeres de Maiz en Movimiento: Spiritual Artivism, Healing Justice and Feminist Praxis. With almost 30 years of experience in arts, activism, academia, and ancestral traditions, Fe has organized, performed at and presented at hundreds of campuses and community spaces, She is known throughout the Southwest as an established Xicana cultural worker of a new generation.
