Join artist Mela M and art critic Lita Barrie for an engaging conversation centered on Mela M’s luminous sculpture, THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE MOVES THROUGH IRREGULAR ANGLES IN A RISING WALL FROM AN ARCHITECTONIC CITY WITHOUT NAME OR PLACE OR TIME.

Installed on the museum’s rooftop in 2021, the work became part of MOAH’s permanent collection in 2022. Mela M and Lita Barrie will discuss the sculpture’s ideas, materials, architectural relationships, and transformation through light.


About Mela M
Mela M has developed a singular body of work exploring geometry, space, movement and form through various shapes of wood sculptures and paintings.Her work has been featured in more than 30 solo exhibits and 150+ showings in museums, galleries and universities in the United States and abroad including Tokyo, Rome and Minsk.Her work is held in permanent collections including MOAH Lancaster (where her rooftop sculpture is currently celebrating its fifth anniversary on display), the Long Beach Museum of Art, MOCA Minsk and others.She holds two MFA degrees, including one from Claremont Graduate University and has received numerous awards and honors.Her work has been featured in New American Paintings, ArtScene, the Crocker Art Museum catalog, and The New York Times Islander.For decades Mela M has focused almost exclusively on expanding and evolving her innovative approach in the building of uncommonly shaped wooden structures.


About Lita Barrie

Lita Barrie is an award-winning art critic who is the Los Angeles Advising Editor of Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art and a regular guest host of the magazine’s podcast. She has written for numerous art magazines including: Hyperallergic, Huffington Post, Riot Material. Originally from New Zealand, where she was an art columnist for The National Business Review and interviewer for Radio New Zealand, she is the author of numerous museum and art gallery artist catalogues including: Barbara Kruger ( National Art Gallery of New Zealand) and Roland Reiss ( Cal State Fullerton ) Barrie has taught aesthetic philosophy at Art Center, Claremont Graduate University and Otis School of Art & Design.
