LIKE TODAY, THE 1930s was a decade of capitalist crisis and social polarisation. Fascist and far right movements grew - but there was also momentous resistance by the left on the streets of Paris, Vienna and above all, in the Spanish revolution.
Five years of rising class struggle between rich and poor in the Spanish Republic culminated in a far right military coup in July 1936. Armed workers' resistance stopped it - sparking revolution.
Civil War began. The fate of both the war and revolution would be deeply intertwined.
Héctor Puente Sierra shows how the hostility of the great international powers, combined with the strategy of a 'Popular Front' government, destroyed the revolution - and paved the road to Franco's devastating victory and decades-long dictatorship.
Sierra also compellingly examines the role of the main actors in the workers' movement: anarcho-syndicalists, reformist socialists, Communists and the anti-Stalinist Marxists of the POUM.
The book explores how Spanish colonialism in Morocco shaped the Civil War, the participation of women in the war and revolution, the national struggles of the Basque and Catalan peoples and asks what the lessons of these struggles are for today.
All welcome.
