Bookbinding Basics: Origami Folds & Creative Stitching

Unlocking the art of handmade books begins with learning how to transform single sheets of paper and basic thread into custom, functional art pieces. Bookbinding Basics is a hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop designed to teach you the fundamentals of structural bookmaking using simple stitches, clever folds, and everyday materials.
In this workshop, you will learn the classic 3-Hole Pamphlet Stitch Method—one of the most versatile and elegant ways to secure a paper signature into a soft cover. Combined with Japanese Origami folding techniques, you will build three entirely distinct, pocket-sized booklets from scratch—no advanced skills or machinery required!
What You’ll Make
By the end of the session, you will walk away with three unique, softcover booklets: a clever, envelope-inspired structural fold that opens up to reveal actual pages nestled safely inside; a dynamic design featuring slanted interior slots, perfect for tucking away tiny notes or ephemera; and a compact, travel-friendly mini-journal ideal for daily thoughts or sketching on the go.
Skills You’ll Learn
-- The 3-Hole Pamphlet Stitch: How to measure, punch, and smoothly sew a single-signature booklet spine.
-- Paper-Engineering with File Folders: Creative ways to fold common manila file folders into several unique shapes and sizes of functional pockets.
-- Origami Book Architecture: Precise paper folding methods used to create structural covers and page layouts without reliance on heavy adhesives.
Personalize Your Project
Once the structures are built, the real fun begins! You will have time to customize, collage, and decorate your pages. We provide a variety of decorative supplies, but we welcome you to bring your own personal touch. Feel free to pack a small stash of items that represent you, such as:
-- Collage pieces or vintage magazine cutouts
-- Sentimental cardboard packaging or postcards
-- Favorite stickers, stamps, or patterned papers
-- Leftover scrapbooking elements
All materials are provided. This class is perfect for absolute beginners, paper crafters, and anyone interested in upcycling or handmade journaling! Minimum suggested age is 14.
