A short presentation on my journey of discovery in uncovering my Northern Irish identity, my father’s ordeals and everything my parents, aunts and uncles didn’t tell me.As a child moving north to Goose Bay Labrador from Montreal, then to southern Ontario, I valued my Irish heritage. Moving to NATO Europe in 1961, we lived for 3 months with my mother’s Irish family. Taught Grade 3 by my aunt, we accessed the kitchen for breakfast through McAtee’s workingman’s bar. Coffins were built upstairs near our bedroom, the hearse kept behind the greyhound kennels.
Every summer, we holidayed from Americanised Europe, renewing our Irish roots.
Years later, I realised what I thought I knew about my parents’ Ireland wasn’t quite true.
