📚 Books for Thought: Black History Month Special
This Black History Month, our IWN Book Club, Books for Thought, will come together to explore Toni Morrison’s powerful first novel, The Bluest Eye.
Led by our wonderful volunteer Nesrine, the session will offer a relaxed and welcoming space to connect, reflect and discuss the experiences and ideas at the heart of this important work. 💜
📅 Saturday 24th October
🕙 10:00 - 11:30 am
📍 Malpas Road Community Centre
Our book club focuses on female authors, particularly writers from the global majority, creating space for diverse voices, perspectives and lived experiences to be shared and discussed.
📖 About the book
Set in 1940s Ohio, The Bluest Eye tells the story of Pecola Breedlove, a young Black girl who longs for blue eyes in a world that teaches her to see whiteness as the standard of beauty.
Through Morrison’s vivid and deeply moving writing, the novel explores race, identity, childhood, beauty and belonging—and the devastating effects of prejudice and internalised racism. Although it addresses difficult themes, it also opens the door to an important conversation about whose stories are valued and how ideas about beauty and worth are formed.
There’s no pressure to have finished the book. You are very welcome to come along, listen and be part of the conversation.
Come for the discussion, stay for the connection. We’d love to see you there.
