During a long weekend in December, 2004, former actress turned advertising director Elsa decides to write a third feature script inspired by the issues she, her boyfriend Bonifacio, and her friends Patricia and Natalia are facing. In 2026, screenwriter and director Raúl resorts to writing autobiographical fiction about his partner, his assistant, and himself as a solution to his creative drought. As the two tales intersect, overlap, and inspire one another, both artists risk destroying their personal relationships in their attempts to revitalize their creative practices.Directed by Oscar-winner Pedro Almodóvar (The Room Next Door), Bitter Christmas combines vivid colors, stellar music, biting comedy, and gorgeous production design into quite possibly the most Almodóvarian film we've seen yet. "Like all autofiction worth its salt, [Bitter Christmas] is a supremely self-lacerating study of the people we hurt (and, more specifically, the complex ways in which we hurt them) when parlaying their personal traumas into juicy fiction."—David Jenkins, Little White Lies.
