Join naturalist Doug Hitchcox for an accessible birding event at Back Cove, one of Portland’s best birding spots! Mid October is a great time to watch ducks and geese arriving for the winter, look for lingering sparrows, or start getting acquainted with the gulls that frequent this area. We’ll be set up during the incoming tide, hopefully letting it push birds in close to us.
During this event we plan on being stationary throughout our birding. We’ll bird near a few permanent benches (see location on attached map) that are along the edge of the Back Cove trail, which is a 5+-foot-wide path of compacted stone dust. More information on the accessibility of this area, and the rest of the trail, can be found in this Maine Trail Finder blog post by Enock Glidden: https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/stories/post/enock-s-adventures-back-cove-trail
We’ll have extra binoculars and monoculars on hand for anyone to borrow.
NOTE: Birdability Week—an annual collection of events during the third week of each October—is a celebration of birders with disabilities and other health concerns, as well as an opportunity to share resources and ideas to help the birding community become accessible, inclusive, and welcoming to everybody.
