POETRY ON STRINGS
Music Inspired by Xin Hun Bie (新婚別 The Newlywed's Farewell) by Chinese Tang Dynasty Poet 杜甫 Du Fu (712－770)
What happens when poetry becomes music? Join NACMS artistic director and erhuist Dr. and pianist for an intimate exploration of program music through 新婚別 (The Newlywed's Farewell), a contemporary work inspired by the Tang dynasty poem by 杜甫 Du Fu (712-770). Discover how composers transform literary imagery, emotion, and storytelling into musical expression, and hear how the erhu's uniquely expressive voice brings this timeless tale of love, separation, and sacrifice to life.
Part lecture and part performance, this interactive Between the Bars event invites audiences to experience the powerful dialogue between poetry and music while gaining a deeper appreciation for one of China's greatest literary masterpieces and its modern musical interpretation.

Designed for people of all backgrounds, these workshops provide a welcoming environment to learn, share, and connect—no prior musical experience required.
Between The Bars series is partly support by LMCC 2026 Manhattan Arts Grant.
