About this Event
KJ Denhert & The Evening News
Urban Folk & Jazz, where songs, groove and improvisation meet.
Award-winning songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, and storyteller KJ Denhert has spent her career creating music in the space she calls Urban Folk & Jazz, where songs, groove, and improvisation meet.
A longtime presence on New York's independent music scene, Denhert held a residency at Greenwich Village's legendary 55 Bar for more than two decades, developing her music alongside an extraordinary community of players. Her international history includes many appearances at Italy's Umbria Jazz Festival, where she also recorded the live album Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz. Through song, voice, guitar, or the story that introduces a tune, Denhert has always made connection with the audience part of the music.
The Evening News began as a jazz project and evolved into a quartet with a language of its own, walking a line between jazz and world music while keeping Denhert's songwriting at its center.
For their first performance at Berimbau Second Floor, Denhert is joined by pianist and composer Nicki Denner, whose jazz and Latin vocabulary and arranger's ear shape the band's sound; Australian-born bassist Adam Armstrong, a deeply intuitive player with an international jazz career; and drummer Eric Halvorson, whose range, subtlety, and groove make him an ideal conversationalist in this quartet.
Together, The Evening News leaves plenty of room for songs to stretch, musicians to wander, stories to emerge, and the evening to become something of its own.
