Beaujolais Nouveau is a french tradition going back years, where they celebrate the launch of the annual harvest of Beaujolais, and (courtesy of Amps Wines) we are have managed to secure a small batch of it!• The first legislation on wine origins (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) came in 1901, and Beaujolais was declared its own region in 1936. The rules around wine making and when the wine could be released were also put together.
• After the Second World War the Beaujolais producers were allowed to release more wine early, a measure of encouragement on behalf of the government to try and lift everyone’s spirits, and the phenomenon of Beaujolais Nouveau grew.
• Georges Duboeuf (known as the King of Beaujolais) was the most influential producer in the history of Beaujolais. He successfully turned Beaujolais Nouveau into an international marketing phenomenon in the 1980s.
• He coined the phrase, “Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!” The wines were shipped around the world and held in bond until midnight, when massive parties were thrown in celebration.
• Other producers jumped on the bandwagon, flooding the market with poor quality wine, and by the late 90s everyone was over it.
• The backlash from the Beaujolais Nouveau craze of the 1980s was reflected by terrible reviews and decreasing in sales.
• So what now?
Some movement back to basics, farming tiny plots of land and focusing more on the rest of the year than just Beaujolais Nouveau.
While the wine growers may make a small amount of B Nouveau for tradition’s sake and to see how good they can make it, the priority is making “serious” wines that may be oak aged or require a few more years in the bottle, like a Burgundy.
This is why there is a limited amount of Beaujolais made every year, and we are excited to be able to offer you some of the 2026 harvest. Our Chef has prepared a classic French dish to accompany the wine - Coq Au Vin, Pomme puree, roasted chesnuts & buttered kale
