In the late 1950s after an adventurous life abroad as a dancer and missionary, Dunedin-born Shona Dunlop MacTavish (1920-2019) returned to settle in her hometown. Over the next 60 years she built a reputation as the mother of modern dance in New Zealand.In support of the Toitū display, Creative Dunedin: DANCE! Shona Dunlop MacTavish, this dance workshop focusses on a choreography excerpt from Shona's book Be Jubilant My Feet; "Turn, Turn, Turn". During the two-hour session Shona’s daughter Trina Laurence and dance teacher Brit Barroga will guide you through modern dance choreography inspired by Shona's work.
This is an active participation workshop suitable for ages 14+. Please wear comfortable clothes you can move well in and bring a water bottle. Dance shoes are preferred but not required. There is a morning or an afternoon workshop available, both sessions are the same.
About the workshop facilitators –
Trina Laurence.
As the youngest daughter of Shona, and born in South Africa, Trina learnt modern expressive dance from her mother for many years, participating in numerous of Shona's dance performances. Now living in Wellington, Trina is married to Chas Laurence and has two grown-up sons. Over the years Trina has been involved in dance as a form of worship at St James Anglican church, and All Saints in Lower Hutt.
Brit Barroga.
As a graduate of University of Otago with a major in Performing Arts, Brit was involved in the Dunedin performing arts scene for several years. During her time in the city, she became well versed in the expressive freedoms of modern dance. Currently one of the National Co-Coordinators of the International Christian Dance Fellowship, Brit is honoured to be leading this workshop alongside Trina.
