Sept. 29th, 1864 - New Market Heights, Henrico County, VAGeneral US Grant is slowly choking the life out of Petersburg, and is dispatching several commanders to block any rebel troops and supplies from reaching Petersburg and Richmond. Moving to cut the railroad south of Petersburg, he orders Major General Benjamin Butler's Army of the James to strike east, in order to distract Lee and southern forces from his railroad objective.
Butler, still stung from the failure of his Bermuda Hundred campaign, launches an assault that will redeem his reputation, and will lead historians to later say it was his "finest campaign of the war."
His plan is to drive north and destory the rebel earthworks at New Market, and then continue on to capture the New Market Road, and strike the Rebel forts near Petersburg, destroying any rebel hopes of a prolonged seige.
Facing him is the venerable Gen. Robert E. Lee and battle-hardened veteran troops under Anderson, Ewell, and Beauregard, including the famed Texas Brigade, "Lee's Grenadiers," who are hell bent to put any yankee to the sword. Union scouts have advised Butler to get underway immediately, for intelligence says that the James River Squadron, a Confederate navy flotilla, is headed to Butler to shell any Yankee forces within range of its massive guns.
