Join us for our advanced body music workshop for educators, musicians, and body music artists. This is a chance to be part of a group activity with Barbatuques, connect with people through rhythm, and create collective music using your own body.
This workshop encourages movement and sound-making as accessible activities that support brain development, coordination, and cognitive skills by engaging both sides of the brain. It provides a fun way to learn rhythms and serves as a fantastic energiser; ideal for enhancing coordination, creativity, and team building.
In-depth exploration of the aesthetic and pedagogical approach of Barbatuques, focusing on rhythmic complexity and collective compositional creation.
The Barbatuques’ methodology was developed by Fernando Barba based on research initiated in 1988. Since 1995, the group has been running workshops across Brazil and internationally, establishing themselves as a global authority in the field.
Technical Content
- Expanded Vocabulary: Refined facial and oral percussion techniques (vacuum, tongue clicks), as well as complex variations in timbres and sound textures.
- Rhythmic Independence: Advanced psychomotor coordination exercises integrating feet, hands, and voice, using binary, ternary, and quaternary subdivisions (sixteenth notes and triplets).
- Rhythms and Styles: Practice of Brazilian and world rhythms (samba, baião, rock, funk, coco) applied to body percussion.
- Creation and Conducting: Structured improvisation games ("Chorus/Improvisation", "Minimal Sequence") and conducting techniques for leading body orchestras.
Please note that this workshop is designed for advanced participants. If you're starting your journey in music or body music, there will be a workshop for non-experienced participants on the same day. Click here for more info.
About Barbatuques
Barbatuques is a pioneering São Paulo-based Brazilian percussion group known for creating music solely with the human body (body percussion) and voice, blending traditional Brazilian rhythms with contemporary styles such as beatboxing and electronic music.
Founded by the multi-instrumentalist and composer Fernando Barba, the group explores the body’s phonetic, rhythmic, and melodic possibilities to create a "body orchestra", gaining global recognition through performances in over 30 countries, events such as the Rio Olympics Closing Ceremony in 2016, educational workshops, and soundtrack contributions (including for the Rio 2 movie).
They are celebrated for their innovative, collective approach to sound, making body music a recognised art form and educational tool worldwide.
