Since its debut as a special issue of The New York Times Magazine, The 1619 Project educates us about the legacy of slavery and how it is foundational to American history and identity. This book has been banned from public school curricula in multiple states and become a flashpoint in national debates about memory, race, and justice. Dr. Lasana Kazembe of the IU Indianapolis Africana Studies Program will facilitate a discussion on The 1619 Project with Deborah Asante, Founder and Artistic Director of the Asante Art Institute; Natalie Pipkin of Black Worldschoolers; and Sonia Matheus from the Museum of Tolerance.
The discussion will be followed by a Q & A session.
