Creative Climate Club

Creative Climate Club is a free, monthly meeting for people who care about nature and are interested in creatively responding to the world around us, our local environment, and wider climate issues.
The monthly meetings will involve creative activities which can help us care for the environment, such as:
- Creative opportunities with artists such as painting, collage, sketch-booking and photography.
- Opportunities to learn with local community experts such as bee foraging walks, pond ecology and talks about the Rive Tyne and its health.
- The chance to make a connection with local nature, wildlife and planting of urban spaces, such as a ‘garden crawl’ to local community gardens.
Over time, members of the club will collaborate to develop our next steps, identifying practical tasks like litter picks, gardening and tree planting that we’d like to collectively participate in, new places we’d like to visit and people we’d like to hear from, and creative activities we can respond with.
Held in our Front Room for ages 13+.

Making an Energy Manifesto
Join writer and artist Susannah Ronnie for a playful interactive workshop exploring a great tool for people power – the Manifesto!

As climate change worsens in front of us, we need powerful tools: ways for ordinary people to shape the world around us, to shape our futures. Communities and movements have used Manifestos for 100s of years to push for positive change. Now it’s our turn.
At the workshop, Susannah will take you through the story of what makes a brilliant Manifesto. You’ll then explore the Durham Energy Manifesto and create your own responses using text and visual elements.
As Writer-in-Residence for the Durham Energy Council, Susannah has recently worked with volunteers from across County Durham and climate hope organisation Threads in the Ground to create the Durham Energy Manifesto. You can learn more about the Durham Energy Manifesto at demanifesto.uk

Mycelial Wreath-Making
Get hands on with a cutting-edge eco-material, made from plant waste and fungus, in this unique workshop led by Matt Hall from Threads in the Ground. Creatively explore ideas of nature and climate change and get immersed in making your own sculptural wreath in preparation for the festive season.
Matt Hall is a self-taught mycologist. Alongside his role as Associate Producer – Mycelium at Threads In The Ground, Matt is also founder of By the Bay Mushroom Co.

Threads in the Ground are a climate hope organisation – unearthing powerful climate stories to help more people be good ancestors. Through creativity and co-creation, they help people and communities to imagine their climate future and to play and experiment with climate change ideas.

Climate Resilient Cities – Blue Green Newcastle
Learn all about water-related climate risks (think flooding!) and creative climate adaptation with experts from Environment Agency and Newcastle City Council. In this eye-opening session, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities our cities are faced with, the changes being made for the future, and what you can do to help.
In the workshop, we’ll look at examples of flooding experienced around the NewcastleGateshead Quayside and beyond - from ‘Thunder Thursday’ in 2012 to more recent occurrences. We’ll then hear about the Blue Green Newcastle project, looking at ways other cities around the world are adapting to be more flood-resilient with ‘blue-green infrastructure’ and what is happening and being planned for our local city. Finally, we’ll look at a 3D model - the SUDs house – to help understand ways we can all help around our own homes and in our communities.
Expect a vibrant mix of talks, demonstrations, discussions, myth-busting and opportunities to come up with your own ideas.
Blue Green Newcastle is a project that aims to protect the city centre from flooding. It does this by using sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) and working with nature.
By using creative ways to manage rainwater, the project also supports the Council’s goals to fight climate change, reduce carbon emissions, and make Newcastle a greener and more welcoming place.
This session will be led by Community Flood Resilience Advisor, Alex Scaife - Environment Agency, and Technical Specialist for Blue Green Newcastle, Carl Hodgson - Newcastle City Council, alongside colleagues.
