About this Event
Wayfinder Waikīkī Plant Tour
Step into the living history of Hawaiʻi through its plants. The Wayfinder Waikīkī Plant Tour invites guests on a guided journey through the islands' unique and storied plant life by connecting culture, ecology, and everyday life in a way no guidebook can.
Guests will learn to identify and understand Hawaiʻi's four major plant categories:
- Endemic - species found nowhere else on Earth
- Indigenous - native plants that arrived and thrived here naturally
- Canoe - species brought by early Polynesian voyagers for food, medicine, and craft
- Invasive - introduced species that threaten the islands' delicate balance
Through hands-on identification and rich storytelling, this tour reveals how these plants shaped Hawaiʻi's environment, traditions, daily life and why protecting this fragile ecosystem matters today.
Guests will gain a deeper understanding of Hawaiʻi's environmental stewardship, including the reasoning behind the agricultural declaration forms visitors complete upon arrival; a small step that plays a big role in preserving the islands.
At the heart of the tour is kalo (taro), the sacred staple that nourished Native Hawaiian communities for generations. More than a plant, kalo represents life, family, and an enduring connection to the ʻāina (land). Every guest leaves with this story in mind creating a lasting piece of Hawaiʻi to carry home.
