About this Event
A must for fashionistas.
Born in Tunisia and based in Paris, Alaïa trained as a sculptor before working in fashion. The “King of Cling,” became famous for his ability to shape and mold fabric into clothes that celebrated the wearer’s form and made women feel both powerful and beautiful. Performers such as Tina Turner, he played a major role in reshaping her image as a solo performer, Rihanna, Grace Jones and supermodels, including Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington, established their unique look through his creations.
What set Alaïa apart was his dedication to construction. He was committed to making each garment himself, from pattern making to cutting to fitting. He worked outside the traditional fashion calendar, presenting collections only when he felt they were truly ready. The exhibition includes 80 of his garments plus a selection of fashions from Alaïa’s personal collection that inspired his work, including designs by legends Cristóbal Balenciaga and Elsa Schiaparelli as well as pieces from the museum’s permanent collection.
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (FAMSF) are comprised of two iconic sites in San Francisco’s beautiful parks- the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and Legion of Honor Museum in Lincoln Park. As the largest public arts institution in the western United States, the Museums house a world-class collection of 151,000 artworks that span more than 5,000 years.
The JCCSF and FAMSF have collaborated for over a decade, and we are grateful that FAMSF graciously shares the beauty and history of their collections with the community through inspiring educational docent talks.
