Award-winning Tlingit author/illustrator Michaela Goade is bringing her stories into the moonlight with a reading at the Anchorage Museum.Goade celebrates her most recent book, Moon Song, at the Anchorage Museum auditorium at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, during October’s full moon. The free family event is a kick-off to Alaska Native/American Indian Heritage Month in November and is sponsored by the Anchorage Museum and Alaska Center for the Book.
Goade’s bright, jewel-toned watercolors depict life, culture, families, and subsistence in the forests and ocean near her home in Sitka. She was the first Native American artist to receive a Caldecott Medal for We Are Water Protectors, also a New York Times best-seller and a 2020 Kirkus Prize finalist. In 2023, her first self-authored book, Berry Song, was named a Caldecott Honor Book. Artwork and videos from Berry Song and Moon Song have been on display at the Anchorage Museum since May, and the exhibit runs through April 11, 2027.
Goade is excited to bring Moon Song to Anchorage as winter creeps in, at a time and place where locals can relate to “the idea of embracing the dark.”
“Winter is when we gather with loved ones to share the foods we’ve harvested throughout the year. We feast and celebrate, dream and tell stories,” Goade says. “This season can seem cold, dark, damp, and endless. And yet, there are times when the world sparkles. The moon watches over us all and always seems bigger, brighter, and more present during this period of longer nights and shorter days.”
In Moon Song, a young girl spins a story for her anxious cousin to help him find comfort in the dark of winter. Together, the children explore moonlight in the forest, bioluminescence along the beach, and northern lights swirling in the sky. At the museum, Goade will read from the book, discuss her own story as an Indigenous author and illustrator, and describe the process of creating her books.
Goade will also read from and discuss her books at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Loussac Library in the fourth floor Learning Commons.
