About this Event
There's lots to see in Autumn on the Surrey Norths Downs. The mushroom season is underway! We'll learn about the remarkable diversity of native fungi, the various habitats with which they are associated and attempt to identify our finds using all our senses. We'll also discuss ecology, toxicity and culinary & medicinal values.
Birdlife is changing as summer migrants head south to be replaced by visitors from the north in the form of Redwing and Fieldfare; handsome thrush species that come here to escape the harsh Scandinavian winter. Finch flocks start to gather with Hawfinch, Crossbill, Siskin, Redpoll, Linnet and Brambling all possible.
Ivy comes in to its own at this time as a late season nectar source for a range of insects including solitary bees, butterflies and numerous stunning hoverfly species.
Leaf colour can be breathtakingly beautiful at this time of year, particularly if the sun comes out to light up the reds of Cherry and Field Maple, the yellows of Ash, Willow, Birch and Hazel and the browns of Sycamore and Horse Chestnut.
At the end of the walk we'll sample a range of fine English wines and delicious cured meats and cheeses at the Albury Organic Vineyard where sustainable viticulture is the order of the day.
The path will be a little steep in places so a decent level of mobility and fitness will be required.
