Deirdre Loughridge and Thomas Patteson will discuss their new book, The Museum of Imaginary Musical Instruments, in an evening that also features two artists from the book! Jonathan Ulman will showcase his speculative snare drums, and Deirdre's band will play transmissions from the "song siphon.”
Deirdre and Thomas are musicologists who met in grad school and started collecting the impossible and improbable musical instruments they found in their research. In 2013, they launched the website, imaginaryinstruments.org. Their new book has been praised by the Wall Street Journal as “curious and lively,” and by Kirkus Reviews as "a beguiling catalog" that "help[s] readers imagine the impossible.”
For this event, they are joined by Jonathan Ulman, an internationally recognized session drummer also known for his modified and reimagined percussion instruments, and the Wiggly Tendrils, a local chamber pop band of string instruments and synthesizer who sing songs about love, trees, everyday life, and the occasional sci-fi space mission.
