With joyful and chaotic energy, Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy must navigate the absurd social conventions that draw them together. This classic tale brings sharp humor, heartfelt energy, and fast-paced theatrics together for a fresh take that appeals to longtime fans and new audiences.
Character List:
Lizzy (Appears 20s-30s, Feminine)- A year or two younger than Jane. Clever, spirited; can be sharp tongued. Gets flustered, which makes her klutzy. Prides herself on good judgement. Not especially beautiful. Very very scared of marriage, after absorbing the lessons of her parent’s marriage.
Jane (Appears 20s-30s, Feminine)- The eldest and most beautiful Bennet daughter. Kind, idealistic, diffident. Always tries to do the right thing
Lydia (Appears 14, Feminine)- The youngest Bennet. Lively, prone to imitating others’ behavior and eavesdropping.
Mary (Appears 18-20s, Feminine) The third Bennet girl. Violent and dark undertones; prone to pedanticism and sulking. A dark goth Bronte character trapped in an Austen world. Coughs to get attention, or to make a point; may fancy that she is dying. May play the piano.
Charlotte Lucas (Appears 20s-30s, Feminine)- Same age as Lizzy. A practical girl with a good sense of humor.
Miss Bingley (Appears 18-20s, Feminine)- A very rich, very beautiful young woman. Fancies herself witty.
Lady Catherine (Appears 50s-60s, Feminine)- Patrician Caesar meets drill sergeant.
Miss De Bourgh (Appears 20s-30s, Feminine)- Lady Catherine’s daughter; a gremlin. Probably allergic to the sun. Underneath all her veils, she may be covered in scales.
Mrs. Bennet (Appears 40s-50s, Feminine)- The matriarch of the Bennet family. Mostly a silly woman, of mean understanding and variable temper. Hypochondriac; when she’s upset, she fancies that she’s dying. The business of her life is to get her daughter’s married. She traumatizes her family with some regularity.
Mr. Darcy (Appears 30s-40s, Masculine)- One of the richest men in England. Too proper for his own good; awkward in most social contexts. Prides himself on self-control and good judgement.
Wickham (Appears Mid 20s-30s, Masculine)- An unfairly handsome and charming gentleman. Probably a sociopath. Raised with Darcy.
Mr. Collins (Appears Mid 20s-40s, Masculine)- A pedantic, obtuse man. The original mansplainer. Rector to Lady Catherine.
Mr. Bingley (Appears 20s-40s, Masculine)- Loves the world and the world loves him. Mr. Darcy’s particular friend. Almost literally a dog.
Mr. Bennet-(Appears 40s-60s, Masculine) The patriarch of the Bennet family. Finds amusement in absurdity; often looks for respectable escape from the chaos of his family life. Can be somewhat apathetic; probably a bit depressed, under everything. Enjoys antagonizing. Disappointed in marriage.
Featured Dancers (Any)- Looking for solo and partner dancers with some experience for a mix of traditional and contemporary dancing.
Ensemble (Any)- Servants and other party-goers, as well as stage hands who are interested in being a part of the on-stage action of moving set pieces.
Also interested in musicians, particularly piano, strings, percussion, or guitar who would be interested in performing. Please contact the director ahead of auditions for more information.
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. This opportunity is open to all individuals aged 18+. Actors of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, and abilities are encouraged to audition for any role. Some roles may be doubled. Accents not required for this production. This play is part of Season 80, presented by Your Theatre Inc. at the Steeple Playhouse in New Bedford MA. Performance dates will be January 15-24 2027 and rehearsal dates will be determined by actor availability.
