About this Event

We return to Philly Typewriter with jazz poems, travel stories, and songs of empowerment. We’ll channel the counterculture of the Beat Generation in community and spoken word. In addition, the typewriters will be set up to write an original scroll like Jack Kerouac’s On The Road together. All are welcome. Aspiring beatniks, dharma bums, and general poetry lovers encouraged. Come for the featured readers and stay for the open mic. A perfect community to try your hands at a typewriter and find your voice in a poem.

Featured performers include:

Krystle Griffin

ess m. kohler

Jeremy Friedman

Refreshments will be provided. Bring your friends.

Doors at 7pm. Open mic starts at 7:30pm.

Philly Typewriter is a wheelchair accessible venue.

Krystle Griffin is an Aquarian alien who spawned from the depths of the Delaware River. A writer, film maker, artist and collector of skills and trinkets mostly left on the curbs of South Philadelphia. She spends her creative time trying to spin brain bees and nightmares into something shiny. Krystle teaches a monthly poetry workshop at Philly Typewriter, is a masthead on a couple of publications such as Meow Meow Pow Pow, and self publishes a zine called LeGrif & The Exploits.

ess m. kohler (she/her) is a Jersey girl and West Philly transplant who believes in magic. by day, ess is a fine arts library assistant and union activist. when not looking at picture books or consulting contracts, she enjoys biking, gardening, and doing free labor for dead people. ess has previously featured at Pen and Pencil Club and Molly's Books, and is the host of Devotion Poetry at Deadbeat in Blackwood, NJ.

Jeremy Friedman is a full-time community organizer, an elected Philly 46th Ward Committeeperson, and a poet who is captivated by points of friction and intersection-- the places where the abstractions of the mind, and the affectations of the heart, scrape and grumble into contact with the material world of the body and the earth. This embodied experience is a pretty good way to characterize the consequences of both politics and poetry.
