About this Event
CONTENT WARNING: discussion and visuals about political violence/guns/gunshots/strong language.
Assassins is a concept musical revue by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman that explores the difficult and sometimes disturbing parts of American history. The show examines the lives, motivations, and perspectives of people who attempted to assassinate or successfully assassinated U.S. presidents, while asking larger questions about the American experience and the dark side of the American Dream.
This show explores ways violence can become connected to ideas of power, fame, performance, and asks us to consider difficult questions without necessarily providing easy answers. What does the right to pursue happiness mean? What does the American dream promise to all Americans, and what happens when that dream is not actualized? Why is political violence so heavily connected to political change in America? We will explore all of these questions and more, all while incorporating American music through the decades, humor, irony, and incredible performance.
Some scenes and language may be challenging, particularly because the characters discuss and portray acts of real-world political violence.
