Asia Cine-Club: Past Lives 패스트 라이브즈 (2023, USA / South Korea)🗓 Tuesday, November 10 | ⏰ Doors: 6PM | 🎬 Film: 8PM | 📍 TicTic, Phnom Penh
Nora and Hae Sung are twelve and inseparable in Seoul when her family emigrates to Canada. Twelve years later they find each other online and talk for hours over Skype, then she cuts it off. Twelve years after that, Hae Sung flies to New York to see her for the first time since they were kids. Nora (Greta Lee) is now a playwright, married to an American writer (John Magaro), and the three of them end up sitting at the same bar.
Celine Song drew on her own life for her first film, and it went from Sundance to Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Nothing explodes. No one is a villain. The husband is decent, the old friend is decent, and the film still breaks your heart, because it's about the person you would have been if you'd stayed. Teo Yoo's Hae Sung does more with silence than most actors do with a monologue.
"The performances of the three leads simply couldn't be better."
– The Hollywood Reporter
"Heartbreakingly romantic, impeccably told, and masterfully crafted."
– Collider
