Explore Gomukhasana and Ardha Matsyendrasana through their traditional context, the significance of their names, and the experience of practicing and teaching them.
We’ll look beyond familiar English translations to consider the imagery and stories associated with these postures, including the shared name Gomukh (a sacred source of the Ganges) and the traditional accounts of the yogi Matsyendra, whose name is carried in Matsyendrasana.
These explorations invite us to approach familiar postures with curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the traditions behind them.
Through guided practice, we’ll examine relevant anatomy, alignment, preparation, progressions and sequencing. We’ll explore variations and the use of props to support different bodies, with attention to how breath informs our experience while holding each posture.
Teachers and trainees will practice using verbal cues, visual demonstrations, and consent based hands on assistance to help students find stability, ease, and an understanding of their own alignment.
The afternoon concludes with pranayama and meditation, offering time to settle and integrate the practice.
Open to yoga teachers, trainees, and practitioners interested in exploring these postures more deeply. You do not need to perform their full expressions to participate.

Katie Beene is the owner of Lotus Pond Center for Yoga and Health and considers herself a lifelong student of yoga. She approaches teaching with humility and curiosity along with the understanding that there is always more to learn and to experience. She doesn't consider herself an expert at anything and instead she values the ongoing journey of asking questions and observing her yoga practice shift and grow over time. Her classes are taught in a mindful and intentional way, with an emphasis on presence, physical alignment, prāṇāyāma, and meditation. Katie encourages students to pay attention to the details of their experience and to expand their understanding of what yoga is. She believes yoga is not limited to postures or something that only happens inside a classroom. It's a practice that can teach us how we breathe, move, and respond to life as it is, while also helping us orient to what is most important to us and what inspires us. Katie often weaves her observations and experience from the nature into her teaching. She enjoys working with students of different ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience through group classes and personalized 1-1 sessions. Her intention is to create a warm and supportive space where students can explore yoga with curiosity and compassion.
