Join Fairbanks Arts for an artist talk with Christopher Burch, this year's guest juror for the 40th Annual 64th Parallel Juried Exhibition.Christopher Burch is an artist and educator based in San Francisco, CA, and St. Louis, MO. He received the Painting Fellowship for his graduate studies at the San Francisco Art Institute (MFA 2008), and has exhibited globally, including at the Museum of the African Diaspora, Luggage Store Gallery, White Walls Gallery, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and the Headlands Center for the Arts.
Burch's work conflates the distinctions between lived and living human experience, mythology, folklore, and history — otherworldly yet infused with a gripping sense of reality. Drawing on painting, narrative, portraiture, landscape, folklore, surrealist literature, and Black rituals of transfiguration, his work explores life and death, rebirth, retribution, and the afterlife as an ever-evolving thematic structure.
In his own words: "I work intending to suspend disbelief — to generate works that produce a deep sense of wonderment. A wonderment that, at its core, is a testament to the power, violence, beauty, grace, and resilience of the poetic human spirit."
Come out on Monday evening to Noel Wien Library's Active Learning Lab to hear Burch discuss his practice.
Free and open to the public.
