Presented at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery, Bookends marks the first major solo exhibition in Canada by New York-based sculptor and AUArts alumna Elaine Cameron-Weir (BFA 2007), bringing together a body of work that reflects both her artistic evolution and a broader cultural diagnosis concerning the entanglement of technology, systems of belief, and their material economies.
Across the exhibition, Cameron-Weir repurposes materials from military, industrial, and commercial contexts, drawing on the affective charge of embedded histories and former functions—and on what systems of power and control leave behind. Her sculptures embrace an apocalyptic aesthetic, not as spectacle but as our contemporary condition, suggesting we already inhabit the wreckage of our own organizing myths. Technology comes to function like a secular doctrine: objects of reverence, mechanisms for engineering belief, means of consolidating authority under the guise of progress. Handcrafted elements, including metalwork, leather tooling, and vitreous enamel, merge with mass-produced industrial parts, suspended by cables and pulleys throughout the gallery to activate a tension between the devotional object and the commercial product.
Even Cameron-Weir's titles participate in this critique, functioning as fragments recovered from sermons or slogans: compressed utterances that carry the rhetorical force of doctrine while withholding their larger context. What her work ultimately asks of viewers is what her titles perform: the willingness to sit with uncertainty and feel the weight of what surrounds them.
Artist Bio:
Elaine Cameron-Weir’s practice explores the systems humans use to navigate the unknown, including science, religion, governance, and creative fields. Her sculptures transform objects from scientific, medical, military, and spiritual contexts into reliquary-like forms that symbolize larger belief systems and power structures. By combining found materials with handcrafted ones—such as enamel, glass, metal, and leather—her installations often appear suspended, balanced by cables and architectural frameworks. These works incorporate transient elements like heat, light, and scent, hinting at transformation and decay, while symmetrical shapes highlight dualities in perception and storytelling. Though open to multiple interpretations, her works suggest thresholds or portals between different states of being.
Born in Red Deer, Alberta, in 1985, Cameron-Weir lives and works in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include Dressing for Windows (Exploded View) at SCAD Museum of Art (2022) and STAR CLUB REDEMPTION BOOTH at the Henry Art Gallery (2021). Her work has been featured in major group exhibitions including The Milk of Dreams at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) and New Time: Art and Feminisms in the 21st Century at BAMPFA (2021).
