About this Event

About Chloe and Her Work
Chloe is a British-Chinese girl who grew up in a small English village. Growing up between two cultures has given her more than one perspective.
She uses Chinese ink to paint the English countryside where she grew up. In works such as Winter Story, On the Way to School and Windy Day, she brings an Eastern visual language to familiar village life.
This year she discovered that alcohol markers on filter paper create a unique texture — somewhere between watercolour and traditional Chinese painting — which she uses to capture Underground passengers and reflect the vibrant diversity of London.
Growing up immersed in two cultures sparked a natural curiosity about the wider world.
At the age of seven, Chloe created a handmade picture book, Toby's Adventures, about an English boy who turns into a panda after a magic show in London and travels to China and Africa to find the magician who can reverse the spell. Through the story, Chloe says she wants to share the beauty and diversity of cultures around the world.
At nine, she researched the geography, people and everyday life of Kerala, and painted her own imagined vision of the region. The work won an international children's art competition, and the prize gave her the opportunity to visit Kerala and experience the place for herself.
For Chloe, art is a way of looking, discovering and remembering. This exhibition brings together her childhood, observations, experiences and imagination — a young girl's record of growing up with two cultural influences and gradually finding her own way of seeing the world.
