Asheville, NC-based roots artists Anya Hinkle (vocals, guitar) and Billy Cardine (Dobro) team up for an intimate exploration of acoustic music rooted in the sounds of Appalachia and seasoned by their travels around the globe. Just back from tours in Japan, Denmark, Sweden, France, the Netherlands, and throughout the US and Hawai’i over the past year, this powerful duo showcases a surprisingly dynamic range of styles and influences.
Originally from the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, Anya Hinkle's music is steeped in the tones of folk and mountain music, featuring vivid storytelling, vibrant musicianship, and striking honesty. Her diverse influences have led her to create a unique form of world-inspired Americana while staying true to her roots. Americana Highways describes her latest album, Oceania (2024, Red Parlor Records), noting, “This North Carolina singer-songwriter has an engagingly smooth-toned classic vocal style with an album that seems to feature pop tunes but doesn’t. She’s the real deal – melodic with rich traditional instincts.”
Oceania is produced by veteran Irish producer Kevin Moloney (U2, Sinéad O’Connor) and features Celtic guitar legend John Doyle alongside slide guitar master Billy Cardine. Americana UK notes, “Hinkle delivers an absorbing vocal performance, full of character and soul…with her own distinctive sound,” while Americana Highways declares the album as “one of the year’s best.” RnR Magazine (UK) says, "Her vocal style…has a mix of purity, intensity, and richness but never strays into cliché…it mirrors the music itself, individual, distinctive, and deeply satisfying.” Songs from the album have been included in No Depression and Folk Alley’s “Best Of” playlists, and the track “Eitil Away” won the USA Songwriting Competition in the World Category.
Lauded as “a darling of the Americana scene” by Bluegrass Today and described by PopMatters as "a burgeoning force behind the Appalachian roots revival,” with Oceania, Anya has reached a new peak in her career, one that’s yielded ten albums to date across her solo albums and collaborations. After obtaining her Ph.D. in ethnobotany from the University of California at Berkeley, she eventually opted to leave academia, seduced by bluegrass and finding greater rewards making music, first as a member of the Asheville-based bluegrass/Americana band Dehlia Low (Rebel Records), and later with the group Tellico (Organic Records).
She went on to record her full-length solo album, 2021’s “ Eden and Her Borderlands. “ The album garnered widespread critical acclaim, including "One of roots music's gems so far this year” (No Depression), “vivid songwriting and transportive vocals" (Folk Alley), described as “Everything one could look for in bluegrass-tinged Americana” (Americana UK), and labeled as "A rising star of Appalachian string music" (For Folk’s Sake). She was a first-place winner of the 2019 Merlefest Chris Austin song contest and was the runner-up in the 2022 International Acoustic Music Awards. Her 2018 record "Relics and Roses" (with Tellico, Organic Records) debuted at #2 on the folk DJ charts, featuring a #1 single with her song “Courage for the Morning.”
Hinkle has performed at many major US roots festivals, including MerleFest, the Richmond Folk Festival, the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival, the Earl Scruggs Festival, and FallGrass/Planet Bluegrass, as well as the Bristol Rhythm & Roots festival. In Europe, she has headlined at the La Roche and Grenna Bluegrass festivals and tours annually in both Europe and Japan. In 2025, Hinkle will tour extensively throughout the US, Europe, and Japan in support of her album.
Billy Cardine has a way with his listeners. His distinctive voice shines through every instrument he plays, every song he composes, and across all the albums he produces. Cardine is recognized as a pioneer of slide guitar, taking the dobro into uncharted genres. You can feel his immense pleasure in taking the audience along for the journey: starting with a gentle float down a river before tossing you into the heart of a raging storm, only to leave you bewildered on the other side, wondering what just happened.
Cardine's patchwork of diverse musical influences enhances his chameleonic ability to blend seamlessly with any collaboration he undertakes, whether on stage or in the studio. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, the Ryman Auditorium, and major festivals like Bonnaroo, Merlefest, and Rockygrass. As an internationally featured artist, he has toured in India, Japan, Europe, and Canada.
Billy's unique voice on all things slide has led him to collaborate with Led Zeppelin's own John Paul Jones, world-renowned Edgar Meyer in his Porous Borders of Music, and dobro king Jerry Douglas, who stated, “Billy Cardine is an amazing Dobro player. He is fluent in everything that I do, and Josh Graves, and everybody that has come before. I got to be with him for a little while at Carnegie Hall for Edgar Meyer's’ Porous Borders. ‘ I couldn't have picked a better example for them of where the Dobro is now or what the possibilities are with the instrument.”
As an engineer and producer, his works have won national and international awards and recognition, including Indie Acoustic Music Project's Roots Album of the Year, Chicago Tribune's Best Bluegrass Records of the Year, and an Apple iPod Playlist Hot Pick. His memorable compositions and emotive playing have been featured on The History Channel's "Our Generation, “ BBC World’s "Destination Music, " and PBS's "RoadTrip Nation. " He is also a sought-after instructor across the US, France, Germany, the UK, Canada, and India. As an innovator, he was recognized by music mogul Moog Music for helping to design their first electric slide guitar, which he debuted at Moogfest. As a founding member of the internationally acclaimed The Biscuit Burners, Cardine launched a prolific and diverse solo career alongside dynamic collaborations, including The Billy Sea, Acoustic Syndicate, North of Too Far Downs, Lovers Leap, Tanasi, Mary and William, Road Less Traveled Octet, The Bhattacharya Family, and RapidGrass.
