You are invited to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Andy Cohen & Ash Devine, two tradition-bearing folk and acoustic country blues players, perform in concert at the Wilson Street Oddfella’s Hall in Blacksburg, VA, on Thursday, Sept. 24th. Doors at 6:30pm and concert at 7pm. $15-$25 suggested donation; no one turned away.
Andy Cohen, coming all the way from Memphis and New Orleans, is a mentor and colleague of local folk singer Ash Devine. Expect to hear old-school Acoustic Country Blues, Gospel, Rags, Old Time & Bluegrass songs, occasionally one of their own devising that you couldn’t tell wasn’t part of the literature already. Blues picker Andy Cohen has long been known as a walking encyclopedia of American roots music – is a connector between the legendary bluesmen of the last century (Big Bill Broonzy, Rev. Gary Davis, Honeyboy Edwards) and today’s generation of blues revivalists. As a youngster coming up in the ’60s folk revival, Andy began his explorations with “source” musicians that led to his current status as a virtuoso fingerstyle guitarist. https://www.andycohenmusic.com/
Devine is known as a true ‘folk troubadour’ because she writes, collects, and performs cross-genre music based on numerous folk traditions including original Americana & indie-folk-rock, traditional Appalachian old time, contemporary folk, and international folk music. Ash has self-produced two albums of original music and is working on two more, including a traditional Appalachian and folk legacy compilation. Reminiscent of Pete Seeger or Joan Baez, Ash weaves story, history, solidarity, and group singing experiences into performances.
Inspired by a decade of international travels with Patch Adams, M.D., Devine offers programs in the nursing care setting with people affected by Alzheimer’s and other disabilities. www.ashdevine.net
