This unique collaboration between filmmaker Ryūsuke Hamaguchi and composer Eiko Ishibashi only screens when accompanied by a live performance of its soundtrack. After working together on Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car, Ishibashi invited him to film material for her live concerts in and around her mountain home in Japan. The invitation and inspiration of the rural landscape grew into two films, GIFT and Evil Does Not Exist. In a nod to the history of silent cinema, GIFT has no spoken dialogue, relying instead on intertitles and Ishibashi’s live musical accompaniment to structure its inquisition into the relationship between sound and film. 2023, Japan, English intertitles with no spoken dialogue, DCP and live performance, 74 min. Copresented by the Department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and the Mary Griggs Burke Endowment in Asian Studies.
