About this Event
Flaka Haliti's artistic practice encompasses mixed media, sculpture, and spatial painting and installations, all with a distinctly site-conscious and site-responsive approach. Appropriation and re-arrangement are continuous threads in her body of work, producing a hybrid practice as negation between Abstraction and Representation. In an effort to bridge the gap between micro and macro scales, she addresses various themes such as belonging, subjectivity, displacement, the human-animal relationship, migration, territorial boundaries, and the demilitarization of aesthetics. Haliti challenges the connection between aesthetics and warfare by examining how this intersection continues to shape influence societies today. She presents an alternative artistic perspective as a means of generating counter-narratives to the violent stories of our time, contemplating what types of myths, political structures, visuals, aesthetics, and linguistic expressions we need to revive and create to ensure a collective future. Charles Stankievech, Associate Professor of Visual Studies at Daniels, will moderate a discussion following the talk.
