Readings in conversation.About this Event
Join Gertie for an intimate evening featuring the work of Lee Lozano, and a reading of texts by writer and director Stephanie LaCava. Lozano and LaCava, two of the most insightful practitioners of a femininity that emerges via negation and withdrawal. While Lozano’s works are installed as part of 82 Nights Only*, LaCava will take the stage to deliver a series of readings whose considerations find themselves as inheritors of Lozano’s own legacy of an elliptical or oblique diarism.
Lee Lozano (b. 1930, d. 1999) was an American artist who left behind a body of work of varied in its formal breadth and conceptual aims. Lozano’s work can be recalcitrant, rebarbative, and risible, frequently all at once. She pursued paintings whose connotations skewered the masculinist overtures of the New York art-world in the 1960s, and later left painting for more performatively grounded conceptual work, characterized by their overwhelming negativity. Her works Drop Out Piece saw Lozano withdraw from the artworld entirely, while Decide to Boycott Women saw Lozano refrain from intentionally interacting with other members of her sex until her death in Dallas in 1999.
Stephanie LaCava is a writer based in New York City. Her work began in American Vogue. Her work has appeared in Harper’s Magazine, Artforum, Texte zur Kunst, the New York Times, the New York Review of Books, Vogue, Interview, and Heavy Traffic. She has published three novels, The Superrationals (Semiotext(e)), I Fear My Pain Interests You (Verso), and most recently Nymph (Verso).
