Leeds & Bradford MAG is proud to announce the latest in our popular series of motorcycle talks. An Evening with Sam Manicom will be held at Squires Bikers' Café on Saturday, 17 October 2026 at 19.30. Sam Manicom, overlander, traveller, presenter, author of 4 motorcycle travel books and contributing publisher of ‘The Moment Collectors’ and ‘The Moment Collectors ASIA’, was born in the Congo in Central West Africa. His family returned to the UK when he was 10 and he has been travelling for much of his life. His first solo trip was age 16 by bicycle into Europe. Many extended backpacking, hiking, cycling, sailing and hitch-hiking journeys later, Sam looked for a different way to travel. He passed his motorcycle test in 6 weeks and 3 weeks later he set off to travel the length of Africa on a 1992 BMW R80GS. This planned 1-year journey turned into an 8-year motorcycle adventure around the world.
Sam now works full time in the world of adventure travel. He says, “We live in an amazing world that is only truly appreciated by getting out to explore it. Experience is not the key. Enthusiasm, curiosity, an open mind, a sense of humour and determination are.”
He’s a keen advocate of motorcycle travel in particular, and when not writing his books, magazine articles and conducting multimedia travel presentations within the UK, mainland Europe and the USA, he’s very much involved with travel related organisations.
Amongst others, Sam has presented at AIMExpo, Overland Expo, the ADVMoto Event, the London Motorcycle Show, The Adventure Bike Rider Festival, the UK’s National Motor Museum, Wilderness Lectures, the Globetrotters Club, the Overland Event, the Armchair Adventure Festival, for Touratech, Horizons Unlimited and various BMW events and at dealerships within the UK and the USA.
He is a co-host for Adventure Rider Radio RAW and has been a guest of multiple BBC travel broadcasts including Excess Baggage and Drive Time. He has been the guest of many motorcycle travel podcasts including BMW Motorrad Ride and Talk.
He was presented with the Overland Magazine ‘Spirit of Adventure’ award for his contribution to Adventure Motorcycling and Overlanding.
Sam’s 4 books take the reader travelling through the different sections of the 8-year journey. ‘Into Africa’ - Africa, ‘Under Asian Skies’ - Asia and the Middle East, ‘Distant Suns’ - Southern Africa and South America, and ‘Tortillas to Totems’ - North America.
He’s been described as ‘One of the foremost & most readable adventure motorcyclists writing about their adventures.’ Ian Kerr MBE.
When he isn’t writing or presenting, Sam and his partner Birgit are usually off riding somewhere. His R80GS is still his main means of transport,
