Twenty-two years ago, a leather jacket, a motorcycle, and a smirk walked into The L Word — and Shane McCutcheon never really left us. She became one of the most iconic characters in queer television: the one fans still quote, still dress up as, still lust after, and still argue about at brunch two decades later.
Now the woman behind her, Kate Moennig, joins us for an evening of candid, funny, wide-ranging conversation. We’ll talk about what it was like to originate a character who became a cultural touchstone, what The L Word’s legacy looks like from the inside two decades on, and what came after: the roles, the podcast, the book, and life beyond Shane.
A critically acclaimed actor and executive producer, Moennig is best known for her iconic role as Shane McCutcheon in Showtime’s The L Word and The L Word: Generation Q. She also starred in Showtime’s Ray Donovan and Freeform’s Grown-ish, with film credits including The Lincoln Lawyer, Lane 1974, and Terry Zwigoff’s Art School Confidential. Most recently, she appeared in Liz Feldman’s Netflix series No Good Deed.
As part of this special evening, Women’s Week will honor Kate with the Women’s Week ICON Award, celebrating her lasting impact on queer television, culture, and generations of LGBTQ+ audiences.
Kate will be interviewed by award-winning author and speaker Felice Cohen, whose books include Half In — winner of a Goldie Award — What Papa Told Me, and 90 Lessons for Living Large in Small Spaces. She also writes the Substack A Love Letter to Letters.
