Alvin was born in Oakland and grew up steeped in the Mississippi Delta tradition. He doesn't just play the blues, he lives it, and he's one of the most versatile musicians of his generation.
He has appeared in some of the best-known blues films ever made: Martin Scorsese's The Blues: A Musical Journey, Wim Wenders' The Soul of a Man and Robert Mugge's Last of the Mississippi Jukes. He has also played solo on Later… with Jools Holland.
Most recently he worked on Ryan Coogler's Oscar-nominated Sinners (2025). He wrote "Travelin'" for the soundtrack and performed Charley Patton's "Pony Blues" in the film, recording at Royal Studios in Memphis alongside Buddy Guy, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Bobby Rush and Brittany Howard.
With Muscle Theory he turns up the volume: Delta blues, Southern rock and roots, played heavy.
