From the timeless sophistication of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Rodgers & Hart, to the extraordinary songwriting of The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Carole King and other artists whose songs have become part of our collective musical memory, Ingrid James explores the enduring power of a great melody, lyric and story.
A celebrated Australian jazz vocalist, Ingrid has long been recognised for her ability to take familiar songs and reveal something unexpected within them. Reviews of her performances have described her voice as possessing a “rare purity”, while others have lauded her distinctive phrasing, clarity and vocal control, and her ability to bring a song and its writer vividly to life.
That instinct has been central to Ingrid’s work. Her acclaimed project with John Reeves, Circumflex, was praised for giving jazz standards, classics and contemporary songs unfamiliar treatments through changes of tempo, phrasing and harmony. Even material as familiar as Brian Wilson’s ‘God Only Knows’ and Eric Clapton’s ‘Strange Brew’ was transformed into something newly compelling.
And in a Brisbane Jazz Club, reviewer Alan Western singled out Ingrid’s interpretations of The Beatles’ ‘Dear Prudence’ and The Rolling Stones’ ‘Ruby Tuesday’, describing them as outstanding and praising the musicianship and empathy of the ensemble. For this performance, Ingrid will be joined by John Reeves (piano), Paul Henderson (guitar), Shelley Bishop (sax), Samuel Vincent (double bass) and Paul Hudson (drums).
Now, in All You Need Is Jazz, Ingrid brings that same spirit to a handpicked collection of songs from the Great American Songbook and beyond.
Expect Porter beside Lennon & McCartney. Berlin alongside Brian Wilson. Rodgers & Hart alongside Carole King. Jazz standards alongside songs that, over time, have earned a place of their own in the wider songbook. There are songs you’ll know intimately, and others you may have forgotten you loved.
Through Ingrid’s distinctive voice and jazz sensibility, these familiar songs are given new colours, rhythms, harmonies and space; not to disguise what made them great, but to uncover something more.
