About this Event
Rethinking Christianity
Join renowned theologian Professor Alister McGrath at University Church of St Mary the Virgin for an illuminating conversation with writer, broadcaster and host of the Sacred Podcast Elizabeth Oldfield about his new book, Rethinking Christianity.
Whether in lively debate with the new atheists, in helping people more deeply understand the legacy of C. S. Lewis, or in his many other writing and speaking opportunities,Dr. McGrath is passionate about inviting people to consider or re-appreciate the depth and meaning of the Christian faith. But in recent years it has been in personal conversation with his students at the University of Oxford that Dr. McGrath has found some of the most exciting opportunities, as the questions of this generation come to light in hearts curious about this "ancient religion" and often learning about it for the first time.
Together Alister and Elizabeth will examine the extent and impact of this renewed appetite for spirituality, faith’s relationship with science, and Christianity’s capacity to offer 'moreness'—a deeper sense of meaning, identity and hope—in an age often stripped of beauty and truth.
Alister E. McGrath
Alister McGrath discovered Christianity while an undergraduate at Oxford University, and he's spent the rest of his life exploring its rich themes and their wider impact. After gaining first-class honours in chemistry at Oxford, McGrath earned his first doctorate in biomedical sciences and two others in theology and intellectual history. He began his teaching career at Oxford in 1983, when he was appointed lecturer in Christian doctrine at Wycliffe Hall. He now serves as senior research fellow at the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion at Oxford University and lives with his family near Oxford.
