Local band Ranger and the ‘Re-Arrangers’ will celebrate the release of their fifth album, Hot Club Swing, with a special concert. The band will perform live versions of all the songs on the album, mixed with stories from the recording studio. CDs will be available for donation, and the album will be released on streaming services soon afterward.Hot Club Swing is the band’s tribute to the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, the first group to infuse American swing with French musette and Manouche stylings. The Quintet formed in the early 1930’s when guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli—along with two rhythm guitarists and a string bass—recorded four songs for a short-lived jazz label in Paris.
The new album includes six tunes from their repertoire, three vocal numbers, two original compositions from bandleader Ranger Sciacca, and one beautiful fiddle-style waltz. Several guest musicians contributed to the album, and are expected to appear in the release concert as well!
“We think that Hot Club Swing is our best work yet”, says bandleader Ranger Sciacca. “There is so much variety—some songs are bubbling over with energy, some are slow and enchanting… we used lots of different instruments and textures to fit those different moods.”
