About this Session:
Commercial restrooms are evolving beyond basic functionality. Today’s designers are being asked to create spaces that provide greater privacy, support occupant health and safety, withstand demanding use, and contribute to healthier indoor environments.
Join AIA California Central Coast and Scranton Products for Designing for Privacy, Health, and Performance in Modern Restrooms, a one-hour continuing education session examining the trends reshaping contemporary restroom design.
Participants will explore how thoughtful restroom layouts, partition systems, and material selection can address increasing expectations for privacy, hygiene, durability, sustainability, and occupant comfort. The course will also examine the performance characteristics of materials such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and their relationship to long-term maintenance and indoor environmental quality.
Learning Objectives
By completing this course, the design professional will be able to:
- Identify key trends influencing the evolution of commercial restroom design, with an emphasis on health, safety, and user expectations.
- Explain how increased privacy in restroom environments contributes to occupant well-being, safety, and comfort, and apply design strategies that support these outcomes.
- Evaluate common restroom partition materials and configurations, comparing their performance related to durability, hygiene, maintenance, and privacy.
- Describe the manufacturing process and material properties of HDPE partitions and assess their impact on sustainability, indoor environmental quality, and long-term building performance.
