Pōneke Anti-Fascist Coalition and Critical Signals invites you to a panel event about the various ways that Generative AI can be, and is being, deployed to advance authoritarianism. Panellists Aditi Tiwari, Dr Mike Joy, Lelitu and Anne Campbell will talk about the authoritarian implications of Generative AI in relation to topics that are important to them, including data sovereignty, workers rights, education, environmental harm, and militarism and surveillance. This will be followed by an open discussion where anyone is free to ask questions, share their own observations about GenAI and authoritarianism, or put forward ideas for resisting this technology.

More about the panellists:
Aditi Tiwari (she/her) on Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Sovereignty:
Aditi is a Master of Professional Business Analysis student at Victoria University of Wellington, whose research explores digital leadership, AI governance and Indigenous data sovereignty in AI-enabled public sector systems through a Te Tiriti o Waitangi lens. Her work examines the intersections of emerging technologies, power, accountability and data sovereignty, particularly how decisions about the collection, ownership and use of data can reinforce existing structural inequalities. As a first-generation migrant and community advocate, Aditi brings both academic and lived perspectives to conversations about digital equity, representation and the concentration of power in technological systems. She is particularly interested in how AI governance can uphold Indigenous rights, strengthen democratic accountability and ensure communities retain meaningful control over their data and digital futures.
Lelitu (it/is) on GenAI and Workers' Rights:
Lelitu is a software engineer in Te Whanganui A Tara with a decade of experience in commercial software development. Its experience has been radicalising at times, driving home the importance of workers rights and protections. It is extremely concerned about how bosses are driving very anti worker practices around the use and adoption of LLMs in the workplace.
Dr Mike Joy (he/him) on Environmental implications of AI:
Dr Mike Joy is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, and an outspoken advocate for environmental protection in New Zealand. His research includes ecological modelling, freshwater bioassessment, environmental policy development, biophysical limits to growth, and the role of energy in society. He has provided expert evidence for high court, environment court and Waitangi Tribunal cases, and has communicated extensively about the influence of vested interests on environmental policy. Mike is the recipient of numerous awards for his research and science communication, including the Morgan Foundation's inaugural River Voice Award, the inaugural NZ Universities Critic and Conscience award, an Ecology in Action award from the NZ Ecological Society, the Charles Fleming Award for environmental achievement, and the Callaghan Medal for science communication from the Royal Society of New Zealand.
Anne Campbell (they/she) on GenAI's impacts on education, learning and the psychological wellbeing of children and users:
Anne is a writer and local activist in Te Whanganui A Tara who has recently started working in primary education. Many of the tamariki they work with have independently expressed a wide range of concerns about AI, increasing her interest in how digital technologies affect learning and emotional development.
Valerie Morse (she/her) on AI, militarism and surveillance:
Valerie is a peace activist, gardener and writer working to oppose the expansion of military spending, the use of AI in the military and deployment of lethal autonomous systems.
