In this talk, Dr. Kobor will explore the emerging concept of biological age—how it differs from chronological age and what it can tell us about how well we are aging. He will look at how biological age is measured using tools such as epigenetic clocks, the factors that can influence the aging process, and whether celebrity “biohackers” such as Bryan Johnson and the Kardashians are really onto something.Drawing on the latest research, Dr. Kobor will explore how everything from lifestyle and social connection to the environments and communities in which we live can shape how we age. He will also touch on emerging areas of aging research and the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to understanding healthy aging.
Attendees will leave with a better understanding of the science of biological aging, ideas they can apply in their own lives, and a broader question to consider: What can we do—not only as individuals, but as a community—to support healthy aging throughout the life course?
*About the Speaker*
Dr. Michael S. Kobor is a professor in the Department of Medical Genetics and director of the Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on how our social environments and life experiences get "under the skin" through biological embedding to influence health and behavior across the life span. As one of the world's foremost experts in social epigenetics, he leads an ambitious research program aimed at translating foundational genetic discovery into meaningful interventions and policy change to promote healthy life trajectories. As director of the Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging, he unites faculty, trainees, and research personnel across UBC with the aim of conducting interdisciplinary research to better understand the human life course and factors that influence healthy aging from the time of conception.
Dr. Kobor has been recognized with many distinctions, including being awarded the inaugural Edwin S.H. Leong UBC Chair in Healthy Aging – A UBC President’s Excellence Chair, Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Social Epigenetics, the Sunny Hill BC Leadership Chair in Child Development, and appointment as a fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) Child and Brain Development Program. He previously led the UBC Social Exposome Cluster and served as director of the “Healthy Starts’ theme at BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute.
