ABOUT THE FILM
AGAINST THE TIDE
Wawa Li / Canada / 2026 / 35’
Since March 2023, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been investigating two non-profit organizations in Montreal, Quebec, the Chinese Family Service of Greater Montreal and the Sino-Quebec Centre, following mainstream medias’ allegations that these organizations have been functioning as secret police stations for China. Thus far, there has been no evidence found, leading to no convictions. The two organizations and their director, Xixi Li, have since experienced various negative impacts from the stigmatization, including financial loss, risk of foreclosure, and emotional and mental distress. Two other individuals, Tina Zhu and Yipeng Ge, have been similarly targeted and impacted by the media. This documentary, made by Chinese-Canadian youths in Montreal, seeks to make sense of what has been happening for a hundred years since the passing of the Chinese Exclusion Act by exploring the historical and pervasive phenomenon of “yellow peril,” the effects of Sinophobia and cyber-racism, and the importance of fighting back.

ABOUT THE FILM
EXCLUSION: BEYOND THE SILENCE
Keira Loughran / CANADA / 2025 / 88’
It is the story of two granddaughters examining the legacy of their respective grandmothers – women of indomitable spirit who fought for family reunification, establishing permanent roots for the Chinese Canadian Community and paving the way for Canada’s policy of multiculturalism.
The film is directed by Keira Loughran, a third generation Chinese Canadian theatre actor and director. Her grandmother was Jean Lumb, the first Chinese Canadian woman to be honoured with the Order of Canada. On her quest, she is joined by Helen Lee whose grandmother, Foon Hay Lum, who at the age of 111 was the oldest Canadian to die of COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic.
Together, Helen and Keira travel across Canada, to learn how the Exclusion Act impacted generations of Chinese Canadian families. They discover more about the pivotal role their grandmothers played. The journey ultimately takes them to Guangdong Province in rural southern China, where they connect with relatives they’ve never met before.
It’s an extraordinary untold story and a timely reminder of the struggle and sacrifice of the Chinese Canadian community and their contribution to Canadian society.

A PROPOS DU FILM
AGAINST THE TIDE
Wawa Li / Canada / 2026 / 35’

ABOUT THE FILM
EXCLUSION: BEYOND THE SILENCE
Keira Loughran / Canada/ 2025 / 88’
