Advanced Navigation
This Advanced Navigation course is designed for those who want to build on existing skills, develop sound judgement, and navigate with greater confidence in more challenging conditions.
If you have little or no experience using a map and compass, we recommend attending one of our Next Steps courses first to cover the fundamentals.
The course is entirely practical, with the day spent outdoors.
Topics covered will include:
- Using different types of maps and understanding different map scales
- Practising accurate compass bearings
- Interpreting contours and reading the landscape
- Techniques for locating yourself in poor visibility
- Safe and effective route planning
- Making use of digital navigation tools
The course is delivered by Ramblers volunteer trainers who are qualified winter and summer mountain leaders. Like you, they lead walks for Ramblers groups.
