About this Event
"For nearly two decades before her execution at Fotheringhay Castle in 1587, Mary lived as a prisoner. Confined to her chambers, she wrote countless letters, many encoded with sophisticated ciphers designed to protect her messages from interception. Through these encrypted communications, Mary continued to assert her authority, influence, and political agency despite her imprisonment.
More than 400 years after her death, the discovery of additional coded letters has sparked renewed interest in the extent and significance of Mary's secret correspondence."
In this talk, Dr Jade Scott, historian and author of 'Captive Queen: The Decrypted History of Mary, Queen of Scots' , explores the material culture of Mary's imprisonment, her complaints about her accommodation, and how it would have felt for her after the magnificence of her royal experiences.
Attendees are welcome to bring their copies of Dr. Scott’s book to have them personally signed by her.
Copies are avaliable for purhcase in our gift shop until 5pm on the day of the event - while stocks last!
