Q&A with Director Cheri Gaulke and Writer/Producer Anne Gauldin to follow screening. Swift House Prize for Best Depiction of the Arts — Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, 2026.
“Gaulke’s argument is that this was not a fringe but a foundation.” — Martin Cid Magazine.
In 1970s Los Angeles, a radical community of women artists picked up cameras, took to the streets and turned their own bodies into art, activism and rebellion. At the center was the Woman’s Building, a groundbreaking feminist art space where performance became a tool for exploring gender, sexuality and identity, while challenging who got to make art in the first place. Filmmaker and pioneering performance artist Cheri Gaulke returns to the movement that shaped her, weaving her own journey from minister’s daughter to lesbian artist and activist into a remarkable archive of rarely seen performances and the voices of the women who created them. Executive produced by Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner, Acting Like Women is a spirited reclamation of a revolutionary chapter of queer and feminist art history.
Featuring music by Billie Eilish, The Linda Lindas, Fanny, Phranc and Holly Near.
