Renowned landscape designer Kathryn Herman’s work has helped define some of the country’s most celebrated residential landscapes. Drawing upon nearly three decades of practice, Kathryn will explore the relationship between architecture and landscape, sharing how thoughtful site planning, horticultural knowledge, and timeless design principles come together to create landscapes that feel both enduring and deeply connected to place. Through a selection of distinguished projects, she will discuss the creative process behind designing gardens that complement classical and traditional architecture while responding to the unique character of each property. Known for her award-winning work throughout the United States and internationally, Kathryn Herman has received numerous honors, including the Arthur Ross Award, Palladio Awards, Stanford White Awards, and recognition from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Her projects have been featured in Architectural Digest, Veranda, and House & Garden UK, among many other publications. Kathryn serves as a Trustee of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and is a member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, College of Fellows.
In Loving Memory of Ariel Gelman
Landscape Architect, Educator, ICAA RMC Board Member
The ICAA Rocky Mountain Chapter honors the memory of Ariel by hosting an annual Ariel Gelman Lecture which focuses on furthering the education of the classical tradition in landscape architecture and design. Ariel is remembered for his design vision, generosity, and quiet strength but mostly for his humorous and witty personality. His legacy endures in the places he shaped and the lives he touched.
Ariel was deeply committed to education. He shared his knowledge and passion for architecture through 9 years of a meaningful teaching career at the Art Institute of Colorado. During this time, he was admired for his ability to bridge practical experience with theoretical insight, inspiring students to explore landscape architecture with rigor and creativity. His dedication to mentoring future designers left a lasting impression and his legacy endures not only in their designs but also in the minds of those he taught.
This lecture was made possible by the support of the Hupf Foundation.
