We are honoured to present a true community ambassador as our next featured storyteller. Please put your hands together for the one and only, Ms. Gale Carter!
Gale Carter is a respected community leader, local historian, volunteer, and lifelong resident of Windsor, Ontario, whose dedication to preserving and sharing the city’s Black history has made her a valued voice in the community.
Deeply committed to honouring Windsor’s rich legacy of freedom and Emancipation, Gale served as Co-Chair of the Windsor Emancipation Celebration Monument Committee. Alongside a very distinguished committee, she helped lead the development of the Emancipation Celebration Monument, unveiled at Jackson Park on August 1, 2026. The monument honours Windsor’s longstanding Emancipation celebrations and the generations of Black residents whose stories form an essential part of the city’s history.
As a member of the Essex County Black Historical Research Society, Gale continues to bring local history to life through public education and storytelling. She regularly leads Black history walking tours through Jackson Park, sharing the significance of the Emancipation Celebration Monument and exploring Windsor’s important place in the history of Black freedom, community, and celebration.
Gale’s service extends well beyond historical preservation. A dedicated parishioner of All Saints’ Anglican Church and a Downtown Windsor Ambassador, she remains actively engaged in the life of the downtown core. She has supported initiatives aimed at strengthening downtown Windsor and creating a safer, more vibrant and connected community.
Her relationship with Windsor itself is an unfolding story spanning generations of advocacy. Recently recognized by Transit Windsor as a “pillar of excellence,” Gale has utilized public transit for more than 75 years, using it as a means of staying connected to the people, places, and community work that continues to shaped her life.
Through decades of volunteerism, advocacy, historical preservation, and community service, Gale Carter continues to demonstrate the power of being deeply rooted in place. Her work ensures that Windsor’s stories (particularly the stories of its Black community) are remembered, shared, and carried forward for generations to come.
Make sure you’re present for another incredible evening of storytelling at one of Windsors most beloved cafes. And you mind as well bring a friend. Pro tip: Arrive early to get a good seat. 😊
