About this Event
It has been some 50 years since the death of iconic Finnish architect Alvar Aalto in 1976 and his reputation has never been higher. His brand of humanist, organic modernism still has an enormous amount to teach the latest generation of architects. In July this year 13 Aalto projects across Finland were designated as a Unesco World Heritage site. Ian Macready will look at the legacy and work of the three Aaltos - Alvar and his two wives Aino and Elissa - who ran the Aalto studio over it's 70 year life . From glassware to lighting, experimental summer cottages and monumental works of architecture, Ian will explore their lives and the studio that spanned many of the extraordinary events of the twentieth century.
Ian Macready has been back and forth to Finland since the late 1980s, and worked extensively with the Artek brand, which has been selling Aalto furniture since 1935. After more than thirty years in the design and architecture world of London, Ian now runs a small boutique travel business which offers 7- night tours to look at Finnish architecture and design from Alvar Aalto's first projects in the 1920s right up to the latest works by contemporary Finnish practices.
